. stocks slid for the 30 straight session. mediocre holiday seas and deadlock over fiscal cliff gave investors little to get excited about. the dow fell 24 points. the so-called fear index or the vix, soaring more than 4%. fiscal cliff concerns pushed the index to the highest level since july. one bright spot though was on the housing fnt. the monthly case-shiller report found october home prices rose 4.3% mpared with a year earlier. the data giving a late sign of recovery in the housing market is actually gaining traction. first our top story, president obama, cutting his vacation short, flying back to washington, d.c. tonight to work on afiscal cliff deal. now, if the stakes weren't high enough, the treasury department upped ante just a short time ago. it announced the u.s. will hit the debt ceiling on december 31st that is monday. treasury department is undertaking and this is a quote, extraordinary measures to postpone the country's date with the debt deadline, but will this bring a new sense of urgency and motivate politicians to reach a budget deal. joining us now, lindsey pieg

: let's take a look at the dow with all this fiscal cliff nonsense going on. it's up, actually about 8 points right there as you can see. still down below 13,000, though, after heavy losses last week. very light trading also as you might imagine on this day before the market is closed for the new year's holiday. while congress cannot seem to agree on a fiscal cliff fix, it looks like a deal has been reached to keep your milk prices from skyrocketing. both the house and senate agriculture committees have agreed to a one year extension on the farm bill which expired earlier this year. the extension must be passed by a full vote in congress before it can take effect. had a deal not been reached by tonight the government would have been forced to buy milk at inflated prices, raising the doss of milk and other dairy products for consumers could have been 8 bucks a gallon, believe it or not. heather: secretary of state hillary clinton is now hospitalized after doctors discovered a blood clot during a recent follow-up exam stemming from a concussion earlier this month. david lee miller is joi

people are saying this fiscal cliff deal isn't going to happen pause the two sides are too far apart and there simply isn't enough time yet. mark, i will begin with you, what happens if we go over the cliff? what will americans experience? >> well i think we are going to go over the cliff. quite frankly i think it is a good thing the prospects of getting a deal after january 1 are significantly higher and that is for three reasons. first now president obama has all the leverage. after january 1st the leverage shifts to the gop. because president obama perfectly going over the fiscal cliff to blame republicans because he can't default on the debt. he will have to compromise between now and february. second of all the baseline gets reset if the tax cuts expire. everybody will propose a tax cut in january and right now we're fighting whether to increase taxes or not. you can see possibility of a deal seen as win-win for both sides. third, if republicans don't come up with a deal, a bad deal right now, they still have the $800 billion in revenue they put on the table from limiting deduct
